Description
For this research project, you will work alone or with another student. Each individual or group will do a research on a transnational corporation (see the list above) in the context of an industry as indicated by some rival corporations in each line in the list above. The objective is to figure out the “commodity chain” (Coe 2013:226-60) and how the corporation’s “transnational” reach (Coe 2013: 294-332) contributes to its profit-making in the context of competition among these rivals in the industry. I expect the length of the paper to be about 10 pages for an individual project (double-spaced with lots of footnotes) plus at least two required charts and tables copied from sources and a bibliography. A 2-person group will submit a 15-page paper (plus relevant materials and a bibliography) On the list below are required questions and issues that you should use strictly in organizing the paper in the outline format. In answering questions, you may use quotations (cut and paste with quotation marks and full footnote references of the page or the article you used, not just internet links). Even when you use your own words, you must use footnotes to refer to your source. Otherwise, you will be considered as an academic thief. Cut, paste, use quotation marks, use footnotes for reference, and use a bibliography. You must use the title of the section you used from internet sites in addition to the last access date in your bibliography. And footnotes are required. (1) origins and general history of the corporation (including a brief history of merger and acquisition so as to figure out the entire picture of this huge corporation). (a) the general outline of corporation’s key industry (key business sites and the headquarters). (b) what did it produce at the beginning? what does it produce or trade now? or what services did it provide at the beginning (and does it provide now)? Who bought and buys its key products? (c) identify an older (perhaps, the oldest existing) corporation in the context of the industry in which your corporation was initially involved. (d) What were the main rival corporations in the national market at the beginning of this corporation? And are main rival corporations in today’s national and international market? For a better grade, use relevant chapters/pages of Global Business Regulation by John Braithwaite and Peter Drahos (on reserve at the Library). Make sure all of you use a relevant chapter from A History of Corporate Governance, edited by Randall Morck (on reserve at the Library) on the country where your corporation originated and/or headquarters. This will help you situate your transnational corporation in a specific national capitalist development when the corporation was established and became initially successful. It may also be useful for (2) and (4) below. [required].(2) the context of this corporation’s main business success in terms of (a) the succession of products that led the particular period(s) of economic growth, (b) the labor process that cuts the cost of products in each period, thus beating the competitors, (c) reasons for why it was important for this company to be part of the general upswing of the national economy, (d) the particular relationship of this corporation with the government by using: John Braithwaite and Peter Drahos (2000). Global Business Regulation. (Cambridge Univ Press [on reserve at the Library]), and (e) more broadly speaking, what economic sector (i.e., a sector = a set of industries) was the corporation involved in at the founding? How did the corporation change its main products? Use Morck’s A History of Corporate Governance. [required](3) organization (and location, if you can find) of production/service operations: focusing on a successful product of this corporation, you will create the sequence and range of actors/entities involved in a particular commodity chain (=supply chain+value chain) with a focus on the supply chain from the initial input suppliers to final retail sellers of the product. Make sure you identify the range of processes this corporation is involved. So, showing the boundary of this corporation’s activities in the commodity chain is important. Use Coe (2013: 223-260). [required]. If you can add a map (not required) in addition to the commodity chain illustration, that will be nice. This commodity chain will start with firm’s principle suppliers and these suppliers’ suppliers (and these suppliers’ suppliers…and so on.). You will also look into any large role for intra-firm trade between subsidiaries and their parent corporation (see Coe 2013: 294-332). Extra credit if you can differentiate the value chain from the supply chain in your elaboration of the commodity chain of a particular product (a commodity). [required] (4) US market share in the main industry (data comparing this corporation’s sales figure to other corporations’ (i.e., competitors’) sales figures in an industry) [tables and graphs that depict both historical changes and comparisons with competitors – cut and paste as an attachment with full references] [required](5) World market share in the main industry (data comparing this corporation’s sales figure to other corporations’ (i.e., competitors’) sales figures in an industry) [tables and graphs that depict both historical changes and comparisons with competitors – cut and paste as an attachment with full references] [required](6) Information literacy: To what extent the information provided by the website of the corporation truthful or factually correct? In what way the corporation tries to manipulate their audience through their website. Check: http://www.lehman.edu/academics/literacy-course-enrollment.php [required ]Where to start looking: -database subscribed by Lehman (do key word searches at Academic Research Complete, JSTOR, Nexis-Uni) -annual report of the corporation (request immediately; often available online) -website of the corporation (and its subsidiaries and its holding corporation if any) -public relations office of the corporation (visit the office if you can, telling them that you are doing a project on the global reach of media/publishing/advertisement corporations) -Lehman Library (ask for help from Librarians) or -Baruch’s Business School Library at 46 E 26th Street, 212-802-6550) -New York Public Library (the business library at 188 Madison Ave., 212-592-7001) -Greater New York Chamber of Commerce (350 5th Ave., Suite 3304; 212-244-0003) and business periodicals -if nothing comes up after all these, try www.scholar.google.com search engine (or switch to the companies listed above). If you are interested in getting a better grade, you should incorporate course reading materials into your outline (and provide page references). Make sure you use Morck’s chapter on the country where your corporation’s headquarter is located from Week 3 with page references: (Author’s name in Morck 2007: page). Global Dreams by Barnet and Cavanagh (on reserve at the Library) must be used by those who work on Sony, Bertelsmann, GM, Ford, or GE.
