In one of his essays, writer George Stroup mentions an important post-Enlightenment insight confronting many modern and postmodern thinkers: recognition of “the historicity of human understanding and the cultural relativity of all human assertions” (CT, 135). This awareness highlights the fact that human understanding and thought is necessarily bound to history and culture, meaning that we as  humans are, for the most part, only able to see, think about, and understand those things that we are historically and culturally conditioned by our prior experiences and contexts to comprehend. Highlight a brief quotation from one of the readings (from ch. 29 provided) that demonstrates “the historicity … and cultural relativity” of human thought. How does your selected author/artist use faith, reason, or imagination (choose one) to try to explain his or her own historical and cultural location in human society and culture in the modern age? You might, for example, address how one of these late-20th century theologians incorporates or struggles against the modernist emphasis on reason or imagination to address issues of faith.
