Module 4: Social Class Group Assignment

Objective We will be using the sociological perspective/imagination to better understand the social location of social class and how it greatly impacts our lives. When assigned a specific social class position in our class discussion, you will be able to take on the role of that social location and apply four specific sociological, terms, concepts, and theories. This is a formative assignment leading up to the exam and final application paper about your life. Instructions Discuss and explain your life according to the social position (social class) you have been assigned to (see below).  You will tell your story as if you are the specific individual living in that social class (be creative with it!).  Make sure you have already read this week’s material before your respond.  Some things you may include in your discussion are (but are not limited to): wealth, power, prestige, your family life, work environment/conditions, income level, transportation, experiences with the criminal justice system, eating habits/diet, health/health care, religion, political views, education, living conditions, leisure activities/entertainment, and retirement.  You will be presenting the data on the specific social class you belong to but keep in mind that there are still variations within the groups and a variety of outcomes.  Be sure to incorporate application of terms, concepts, social theory, and any other relevant information from the textbook and/or lecture into your discussion where applicable. At least four terms, concepts, and/or theories need to be used in your post (bold these terms). Note: you will need to respond to students in at least one other social class so you can have a better understanding of the different social positions. Capitalist/Upper Class: Last Names beginning with A – E Upper Middle: Last Names beginning with F – J Lower Middle: Last Names beginning with K- O Working Class or Working Poor: Last Names beginning with P – T Underclass: Last Names beginning with U – Z Please use the chart in your Module (Gilbert and Kahl’s Social Class Ladder Model) and the information on social classes in your textbook before you begin.
