Some information that will help you identify the topic Your assignment for this course is to write a 4-6 page research paper.  The audience for the paper is a general one unless you define some specific audience, which you may do if you want; if you define a specific audience, you should include a rationale for doing so in this document where you are being asked to identify the topic.  The paper will need to include several references, both in the text itself and at the end of the paper in “References”; we will go over this in some detail later.   Part IX in your textbook concerns choosing and focusing the topic; you should read it.  The following web sites also offer a good deal of help not only in identifying the topic but in all stages of the writing process—I strongly recommend using these sites to supplement the book. This will be the first of two rough drafts for your research paper. For this first draft, don’t worry so much about citing sources perfectly or formatting the paper. If you think about the outline as the “bones” of your essay, what I really want to see in this first draft is an attempt to get the “meat” of your essay down. We’ll worry about how exactly to integrate sources and format the paper after your first draft is done. One quick hot tip: even though you’re not worrying about citing sources yet, make sure to note where you’re incorporating the ideas/words of others in your rough draft. (Page number + title of the article or a hyperlink is usually good enough.) If you forget to do this, you may find it difficult to go back later and figure out where those quotes or paraphrases came from.
