Description
WRITING ASSIGNMENT on Wade & Marx-Ferree, “How to do Gender.” This essay will use Argument of Definition (or Categorization), to argue with one of the above authors about a position you would like to take on one topic. The writing should follow the plan detailed below. PLAN: Here is a sample based off the guide to writing such arguments from our text. Introduction A). Once you decided on what topic you would like to explore and argue about, you must formulate a thesis statement that lets readers clearly know what your stance is or why the issue is important. If you have difficulty coming up with a strong thesis statement, try formulating it as a question then revise as a thesis statement accordingly. Arguments of Definition can be related to genus, species, conditions, or fulfillment of conditions, so your information should also identify which type of argument you are using and which author you will be writing about. B). The introduction should also include a brief overview or summary of the author’s main ideas, and how these are argued by using definition throughout the article. It is not yet necessary to quote, paraphrase or go into any specific detail at this point. This information should be confined only to the body paragraphs. 2. Body Paragraphs—should have the following parts, although the emphasis on the first two may not be as important. Note that whatever approach is taken there must be enough evidence to explain or support the definition. A). A claim involving a question of definition (most likely found in the introduction but elaborated here). B). A general definition of some key concept (again, can be mentioned in the introduction but elaborated on in body paragraphs). C). A careful look at the topic in terms (or through) that general definition. Related definitions or terms can also be look at provided that connections are strong, make sense, and complement your thought. Evidence from every part of the argument as found in the articles. E). Careful considerations of other views and counterarguments (can be throughout body paragraphs, or toward the essay’s conclusion). Conclusion—here drawing out some implications of the argument.
