Research Paper Assignment #1: Proposal/Position Paper  This assignment will get you started on the research project . Follow the steps below and you should have a first draft of the introductory paragraphs of your research paper ,which at this stage will be called your proposal/position paper. Step #1: Choose carefully and wisely a topic that relates to Undocumented. Below are possible topics to choose from: -Jeffrey Sessions-his position and influence on immigrants and DACA  the current official U.S. Immigration policy on family reunification or “chain migration”,  -police profiling in New York City and what the New York City Police Department (NYPD) is doing about it.  -causes of family separation due to immigration and consequences for young children – two most common reasons immigrants return to your native country  – two most common reasons people emigrate from your native country – neighborhood crime in your current neighborhood and what the New York City Police Department is doing about it – the rights of the undocumented when injured on the job -the best way to find affordable housing in New York City -two significant roles of a mentor -health issues related to living in a public shelter -bullying –the negative consequences of bullying and the best ways to deal with it -the current stressful consequences of being undocumented in the United States -living a double life as an undocumented immigrant -suggest a topic if you don’t like any of the above so long as the topic relates to Undocumented Step #2: Write a proposal/position paper that does the following: A.    Answers the following questions: 1.     Why is the topic interesting to me? 2.     What experience or knowledge do I already have about it?  3.     What feelings do I have about it? 4.     What people or places do I associate with it? 5.     What have I read about it? (refer to how the topic appears in Undocumented ) 6.     What do I want to know about this topic that I will investigate or research?  7.     What approach to my chosen topic do I want to take: analytical, expository, or argumentative. (See the Tips for Writing Your Thesis Statement below to help you decide which approach to use. You may end up changing your mind after you begin to research your topic.) B.    The content of your proposal/position paper should tell what your topic is, why you have chosen it, what you already know about it, and what you would like to find out.   – The purpose of the position paper is to get you to commit yourself to a topic and to make it clear to yourself and others what topic you have chosen, why, and your plans for learning more about it.    C.    Follow this basic format for this Research Proposal/Position Paper:   Paragraph one: state your topic, explain why it is valuable to research and why it is of particular interest to you.   Paragraph two: state what you know about the topic, refer to your experience with the topic and how the topic relates to Dan-el Padilla Peralta, the author of Undocumented, including sub-topics or other topics you will have to consider in order to adequately research your topic.   Paragraph three: state the questions (approximately 5-10) you will attempt to answer through your research and writing.  Be sure that they are clear, in logical order, answerable and important with the understanding that the questions may increase and vary in nature as you research the topic.    Tips for Writing Your Thesis Statement 1   1. Determine what kind of paper you are writing: An analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience. An expository (explanatory) paper explains something to the audience. An argumentative paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim with specific evidence. The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-and-effect statement, or an interpretation. The goal of the argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true based on the evidence provided.
