Traditional Immigrant Cities v. Destination Cities Goal: Reinforce some of the research findings presented in this module and enhance data management/analytical skills Directions: Academics have long distinguished between immigrant destination/”gateway” and non-destination cities. The criminological literature has focused largely on levels and trends of crime across communities in traditional immigrant destination cities. In this assignment we will look at some of the specifics of your city. First, I would like you to discuss whether you believe this continues to be a relevant designation regarding immigrant residential settlement patterns? Second, referring to the area for which you previously collected crime and demographic information, would this city be designated as a traditional or non-traditional “gateway” city. Why do you characterize the city as such? Compare the percent foreign-born, the median household income, and percent living in poverty (defined as individuals below 100 percent of the poverty level) for your city to corresponding levels in the city of Los Angeles for the year 2019 (Please use the ACS 1-year estimates). To do this you will need to again use data obtained from the Census (data.census.gov).1 How similar (or different) are the characteristics of your city to those in Los Angeles? Where do you see the largest differences? In a narrative format (not using bullet points), provide your response in 400-600 words, using acceptable grammar, punctuation and other conventions of the English language.
