Description
PART 1: For this assignment, you will conduct an interview (30-45 minutes) with someone from a different culture than yours and someone different from the first interaction experience. You will explore topics from Chapters 5 & 6 such as verbal communication styles and contexts, being bi/multi-lingual, contact vs. noncontact cultures, nonverbal communication codes such as physical appearance, kinesics, proxemics, chronemics, haptics, eye contact, silence etc. You will explore cultural dimensions such as individualism/collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, etc. Please create your own interview questions. Take notes during the interview OR do an audio recording to help you with the second half of the assignment. Due to social distancing, this interview can be done by video call on Zoom, Google Hangouts, Skype, or WhatsApp (all can be downloaded for free). PART 2 (what you submit): After the interview, you will write an analysis about the experience. DO NOT write a direct transcription of the interview. Overall, your paper should answer the following questions: What are 2-3 important aspects about the interviewee’s culture that you learned (related to topics from Chapters 5 & 6)? Pinpoint specific examples from the interview that highlight these topics. Identify AND explain 2-3 of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions that were explored in the interview that you found to be significant for their culture. Pinpoint specific examples from the interview that helped you to identify these cultural dimensions. How was their culture reflected in the way they interacted with you before/during/after the interview? How did the intercultural interaction make you feel? What can you reflect on regarding intercultural communication after experiencing this interview? IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER: Avoid “yes-or-no questions.” These do not provide an opportunity for explanation- and the richer the information, the more help you will have in writing your analysis. Your interviewee may not know some of the jargon that you’ve learned in this course, so be prepared to explain what certain terms mean (i.e. polychronic/monochronic time orientations, high-context communication, kinesics, proxemics, etc…) or put them into simpler terms for interview purposes. In-text citations and a Reference page are required for references used, including our textbook. This should go without saying, but grammar, spelling, and writing ability will be evaluated along with content. If you need assistance with this or future writing assignments, please contact the Writing Center located in Waterfield Library at http://libguides.murraystate.edu/writingcenter (Links to an external site.) Required: minimum 3-5 full pages of your writing, minimum 2 quality sources, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, 1” margins, double-spaced, Title Page, References page, and in-text citations in APA format (abstract not required). Checklist for Paper- Check this link before submitting. This is what I’ll be looking for when evaluating your paper. Previous Next
