Address any instructor comments and questions for full credit by Sunday 11:59 pm CT. Chapter 1 Introduction Introduction This paragraph should contain information as to the importance of the problem/topic you have selected, a brief background on the problem, and what you intend to research and why. This section should be at least 150 words. Problem Statement The problem statement should allow the readers to understand why this particular study is important and how the study will attempt to answer contemporary, relevant questions in criminal justice. Your problem statement should be developed around the following statement stem: It is not known how or to what extent (fill in problem.) Example Problem Statements: It is not known how or to what extent bicycle patrol officers influence public opinion of police officers. It is not known how or to what extent community policing impacts the public’s perception of police. It is not known how or to what extent social media influences college students’ perception of police. Purpose Statement Include a sentence saying “The purpose of this research is to examine how or to what extent…” under this section. Clearly identify the goal of the study in one precise sentence. Example Research Project Purpose Statement: The purpose of this research is to examine how or to what extent bicycle patrol officers influence public opinion of community police officers. The purpose of this research is to examine how or to what extent community policing impacts the public’s perception of police. The purpose of this research is to examine how or to what extent social media influences college students’ perception of police. Hypothesis A hypothesis is used in an experiment to define the relationship between two variables. The purpose of a hypothesis is to find the answer to a question. A hypothesis presumes there is a relationship between the two variables in a way that can be tested with empirical data. In this research project you will use an “if, then” statement. The cause is called the independent variable; and the effect is called the dependent variable. If the independent variable is (increased, decreased, or changed), then the dependent variable will (increase, decrease, or change.) Example Hypotheses: If the police bicycle patrols increased, instead of cars, then community satisfaction with law enforcement would improve. If community policing is applied then the public’s perception of police is improved. If social media is not favorable then college students’ perception of police is not favorable.
