Tutorial Paper: Scaled Population Profiles

Topic: Students are required to produce a population profile of a sub-national region. The profile should be 1,000 words in length (excluding tables, graphs, and references). The case study sites could be: Suburbs within Sydney (ABS code: State Suburb, SSC) NSW Statistical Local Areas Level 4 (ABS code: SA4)   The profile should explore the current demographic situation and could cover such attributes as: – population size and distribution – age-sex structure – birth and death rates – ethnic composition – labour force characteristics – socio-economic composition   You do not have space to explore all of these issues. It is fine for you to focus on one or two areas.   In addition, the profile should also explore some of the major changes that have occurred in population over the past decade or so (e.g. rapid growth/decline, changing age or ethnic composition).   Where appropriate, the profiles should compare and contrast the case study location with other spatial scales (e.g. LGA, Sydney, NSW or Australia – i.e. how is the case study similar to or different from these other areas?).   Each profile should also include at least 1 map and 1 graph/table which aid in illustrating the profile of the area.   Reports should critically evaluate the data available (i.e. what are the positives/negatives/challenges/limitations of the data?).   Potential case studies Suburbs within Sydney             – Select any suburb in Sydney   NSW Statistical Area Level 4 (SA4)             – Central Coast                                                            – Sydney – Eastern Suburbs      – Sydney – Northern Beaches                          – Sydney – Inner South West   – Sydney – Baulkham Hills and Hawkesbury      – Sydney – City and Inner South – Sydney – North Sydney and Hornsby                        – Sydney – Ryde – Sydney – Inner West                                     – Sydney – Outer South West – Sydney – Outer West and Blue Mountains     – Sydney – Parramatta – Sydney – Sutherland   Students will begin working on their profile in the Week 2 Tutorial.   Details of how to access Census data is provided in the Week 2 tutorial instructions
