Your goal is to convince me that your favorite movie is a great film. Basically, I want you to try to persuade me to watch this film, assuming I have not already seen it.

Here is the information you need to include:

The Basics – Here is What I Need to Know… the TITLE of the Film

• The title of the film you will be discussing should be one of the first things you mention.

• If there are several films with the same title (Spiderman), be sure you are clear which version you will be discussing.

• If there are several chapters of the same film (Mission Impossible/Harry Potter/Avengers), be sure you are clear which specific film you will be discussing.

• By the way, you are not allowed to use an entire movie franchise as your “favorite” film.

Date of Release

Tell me when your film was released.

If the film was released on-line, you should include this information as well.

Starring??? Who is IN your favorite film?

Be sure to include some of the cast of the film. Tell me the stars of the film. How many names you include is up to you.

Plot – What’s this film about, anyway?

• Chances are, I will know the film you will be discussing. However, there are many films I have not experienced.

• Briefly detail, describe, summarize the PLOT of the film.

• Do not tell me the entire film, but you need to discuss the basics of the plot.

Finally, why is this your favorite film? Here are some common reasons people LOVE movies… A specific Actor or the entire Cast

• Actor/cast – people like individual actors – I love Tom Cruise movies, and A Few Good Men is one of his best.

• I love The Avengers because the entre cast is a collection of remarkable actors: Robert Downey Jr., Samuel Jackson, Chris Pratt, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, etc.

Other Concepts that Make a Film GREAT…

• Characters – the people we meet are interesting, remarkable, memorable • Storyline (plot) – the twists and turns, the drama, the humor

• Soundtrack – the songs – the music is vital

• Special Effects – impressive visual impact

• Cinematography – the LOOK of the film – scenery, setting

• The “ending of the film” or the “climax” – I never saw it coming • The film’s ultimate message – Hope? Despair? Forgiveness? Love? Revenge? Justice? Righteousness? Duty? Honor? Good triumphs?

Why do people REALLY LOVE a FILM? The EMOTIONAL connection!

• Most viewers end up loving a film because of how the film makes them FEEL.

• They love a film because the film elicits an emotional response – joy, sadness, pride, laughter, tears, fear.

• A great film can remind a viewer of a better time, of their childhood or childhood memories, of a date, a partner, family, friends.

• Does your film do this?

• Many people establish a “personal connection” with a film and THAT makes it their favorite movie of all-time!
