Task: Pick three of these 5 questions and answer each question with a word count of 500 to 800.

1. Analyze the elements of mise-en-scene and cinematography in these three Images (they happen in one motion). Interpret how they combine to comment upon the wider themes (implicit and/or symptomatic meaning) in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

2. Analyse the editing of this fight scene from the film Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World:

Using the editing terminology learned in class (and from the book), describe the editing of the most important parts of the scene and explain the effect that they have on the audience. What makes Scott Pilgrim’s editing special? What meaning could this style of editing have in relation to the coming-of-age plot?

3. Analyse the setting (architecture, colors, environment, positions, etc.) and put this picture into its filmic context, then examine its relevance to the plot of the film. In addition, focus on its symbolic meaning – what does it demonstrate, if one takes the film’s overarching story and meaning into account?

4. Analyse the sound of Gravity by focusing on the contrast between bodily sounds, and silence. What is the importance of silence and what does the film convey with the use of it?

5. Describe the genre of science fiction in relation to Blade Runner – what genre can Blade Runner also be set in? Use examples of the film (costume, setting, plot, characters, etc.) to support your argument.
