Importance of Training and Experience

The discussion assignment provides a forum for discussing relevant topics for this week on the basis of the course competencies covered.

For this assignment, make sure you post your initial response to the Discussion Area by the due date assigned.

To support your work, use your course and text readings and also use the South University Online Library. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial postings. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between two or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Cite sources in your responses to other classmates. Complete your participation for this assignment by the end of the week.

For this final discussion, we will consider the value of training and experience. In the criminal justice field, managers generally have been promoted from within, ensuring that they bring experience to the leadership position. However, formal education may be lacking.

• Which has more impact in the preparation of a leader: experience or training? Why? Does the answer to this question differ between criminal justice organizations and the business world?
• When you think about an effective leader in your own work experience, what specific qualities or traits made that leader so effective?
• What obstacles will an “experienced” manager face, if required to supervise employees who are better-educated and better-trained? If you were in this situation, as manager, how would you address the tension that would exist?
• How can leaders in criminal justice develop skills in areas where they are deficient? What are the organizational conditions that can facilitate this leadership training? Explain the techniques and theories that can be adopted.
