My vision is to create an environment that encourages learning and growth. As a leader, I ought not only to inspire my followers and those that report to me but I should equip them with the skills to be able and good leaders as well. My vision is to not only lead but to provide an opportunity for those that I lead with leadership skills and that can only be done by creating an environment that supports learning and growth.
I desire to be a leader that is selfless and that is interested in uplifting everybody. A good leader does not only offer directions but they make it possible for their followers to know how to identify direction. I want to be a leader that puts the interest of those that he is leading above their interest. I desire to be a visionary leader who is geared at bringing improvements in the perception of followers.
There are three goals that I want to achieve as a leader. Top on the list is to become the best mentor. I desire to influence people to not only be good but to excel in all that they do. My second goal is to build connections with all the people that I interact with. Strong connections make it possible for one to know what makes a person tick. My last goal is to be an excellent communicator. I have identified that the majority of leaders are poor at communication; they listen to respond, rather than listen to understand.
My mission is to be the best mentor which will be achieved through practicing effective communication, building a reliable and strong connection, and creating an environment that encourages learning and growth.
I carried out my leadership style assessment on the skillsyouneed.com. Based on the results of the test, my leadership style is the coaching style. My results indicated that I favored the “consider this” approach in an attempt to nature talent and the skills of the individuals that I lead. The coaching leadership style emphasizes on the motivation of those being led. Consequentially, the motivation of the leader that prescribes to the coaching leadership style is the motivation of the individuals being led. I find that I am greatly motivated when those that I am leading are improving on their skills and knowledge. If my team is motivated then as a leader I am also motivated.
My leadership style supports the motivation of others. Leaders that prescribe to the coaching leadership style prefer instilling confidence and skills to those that they are responsible for. Coaching leaders show how an action is supposed to be done and demystify actions or processes that are considered difficult (González-García, Martinent & Trinidad, 2019). The coaching leadership style does not focus on group motivation, rather it focuses on individual motivation which ignites group motivation.
I plan to mentor as many people as possible. By providing my team with the skills to be effective leaders and skills that bring about general improvement and growth, I will be able to motivate them. The coaching leadership style emphasizes the knowledge that everybody or every group member has a skill. Coach leaders tap into the skills of their team members to bring about development. To develop my team members, I will leverage their strengths to show them that they can achieve anything so long as they work hard towards it. The coaching leadership style is one of the leadership styles known to emphasize the motivation of followers.
My Slogan: I am not what has happened to me. I am what I choose to be.
I remember an incident where my team was not putting the effort that was expected of them to achieve their annual target. To entice them to put more effort, I promised that the person that would be the best performer would receive a fully paid vacation. All the team members put in the effort to stand a chance to go for a fully paid vacation. At the end of the year, I realized that the target of the team had been attained. However, the team members had not acquired new skills as well as knowledge. Their focus when working towards the annual target was the fully paid vacation and as a result, the team members did no experience growth.
Given the knowledge that I have acquired, and granted the same scenario, I would handle things differently. Rather than offer an incentive, I would motivate the team members to succeed by leveraging their strengths. Every team member has a strength or skill. The above action would force the team members to improve. Consequentially, the average performance of the team would improve
Another challenging incident I encountered was on my mission to improve a team that I led in the past. The team was an average performer with a huge disparity between top performers and weak performers. To bring about improvement, I came up with a competition where the best performer would get a present. The competition did not bring about the general improvement of the team. Instead, it widened the gap between top performers and low performers’.
In light of the knowledge I have and granted the same scenario, I would come up with a strategy that emphasizes the strongest helping to improve the weakest. By so doing the average of the team would improve as the weakest links would be better.

My team slogan is “the team is as strong as its weakest link”. The slogan emphasizes on two main things. The first thing is that a team is united through a link. A link can be the duty assigned to the team or the goal of the team. The second thing is that the success of a team is not guaranteed by those that are high performers. Rather it is guaranteed by those that are weak performers. The slogan emphasizes improvement by those considered to be the weakest. The only way that the weakest links in a team can improve is by the strongest in the team working to improve the weakest.
My slogan helps in collective decision making as all members of a team or a group have a responsibility to the team. For an action to be implemented effectively by a team, all team members have to properly execute the action. My slogan will make it clear that each member of the team must ensure that they are not the weakest link. The slogan as well will motivate the strongest in the team to help the weakest improve for the team to be strong. Consequentially, the general improvement of the team will be witnessed.
The slogan emphasizes the adoption of a conflict management style that focuses on having all conflicting members benefit from conflict. The slogan reminds those that they are conflicting not to be the weakest link of the team. The slogan encourages team members to resolve conflicts in a fast manner to avoid a situation where one of them becomes the weakest link. The slogan emphasizes on every member being the strongest link. By having strong team members, success is guaranteed.
