Graduate students are responsible for preparing a research paper investigating a topic relevant to either a global health topic, a public policy related to healthcare delivery, or a comprehensive profile of a national healthcare system. During the first few weeks of class, students should identify and consult with me regarding their desired topic. These papers should attempt to either advance an argument or provide an in-depth investigation regarding the chosen topic. Students are expected to use a mix of scholarly sources (books and academic journals – be very careful not to rely too heavily on the Internet). Additional writing guidelines will be made available on the course website. Graduate student papers should be approximately 16 pages in length and require a minimum of 12 scholarly sources. Paper/Presentation topic: For both my paper and presentation, I will be focusing on equal treatment for African American women in healthcare.  Abstract: Racial discrimination and sexism in healthcare has been an on-going problem. African American women are at the ultimate disadvantage because of their race and gender. These women are going undiagnosed, unheard, and turned away when attempting to receive the medical treatment they need. Studies show that this happens far too often and can have fatal end results for many if the issue is not addressed with an effective and efficient resolution. Consequences of mistreatment for black women (mistrust, fewer black patients)
