Readings and answering questions Q1.The incarceration rate for women has been increasing over the past several dedicates AND women are increasingly incarcerated for non-violent, drug-related crimes. (See lecture & Richie.)   TRUE OR FALSE Q2. Many incarcerated women have had repeat periods of homelessness. (See lecture & Richie.) TRUE OR FALSE Q3. According to Richie, why are 1) Treatment for Substance Abuse and 2) Violence Prevention and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) significant challenges in prison re-entry for women in particular? Q4.What are “wrap-around” services according to Richie and why are they important for women to better reintegrate into their communities after leaving incarceration? Q5. (Essay) Western’s book, Homeward, showcases many stories of people’s lives after they leave prison. However, Western found several major themes in prison reintegration across Chapters 4, 9, and 10. Instead of asking individual questions about the important findings from the book chapters, in this final week, you are going to bring together key themes yourself. Some major points are highlighted in the lecture, but the main goal of this essay is for you to describe the key findings from the book chapters in your own words. (Thus, there are several valid avenues you could pursue.) Your task for this short essay is to describe two major ways in which each of these features affects returning to the community: 1) Gender, 2) Mental Health and/or Substance Abuse, and 3) Race and/or Racism. You should expect to write around the length of a brief paragraph for each point. Western’s chapters alone can effectively respond to this prompt, but you can include Richie’s points as well if you wish. (Notes: The risks associated with incarceration in the first place are undoubtedly connected to experiences returning to communities and thus, you can connect these points to reintegration as Western does. Also, Western’s Chapter 9 is titled “Women” since it is the one section of the book that he dedicates to women’s specific experiences. For Point #1 on gender, you can either write only about women’s unique challenges based on Chapter 9 OR combine findings from across the chapters to discuss how gender impacts reintegration.) Essay Outline Describe two major challenges specific to women’s reintegration from Western’s Chapter 9 OR discuss two gendered patterns of reintegration from across the chapters. Detail two ways that mental health and/or substance abuse impacts reintegration from Western’s Chapter 4. Describe two ways that race and/or racism impacts reintegration from Western’s Chapter 10.
