World War II and the postwar era had profound effects on the United States as the nation and its people prepared to fight for the preservation of freedom and democracy around the globe. This week you will discuss the effects of WWII and the Cold War on American society by considering the following: Part 1: How did WWII affect American society at home? Make sure to mention political, social, and economic changes in your answer and to discuss changes for women and African Americans during the war. Part 2: In what ways did the end of WWII set the stage for the Cold War? Discuss two different “skirmishes” or battles (physical or ideological) that characterized the dynamics of the Cold War. How did the climate created by the Cold War change the meaning of freedom in the United States? Part 3: The 1950s are often discussed as a period where the vast majority of Americans were able to live “the good life.” What changes happened in post-war society that characterized this? How did those changes expand or contract freedom for average Americans, women, and minorities? Is it accurate, in your opinion, to call the postwar era the Age of Affluence? Why or why not?
