Art 129 – Art Appreciation (Summer 2020) Museum Essay (100 Points – Due by Sunday of Week 7) Prairie State has an affiliation with the Art Institute of Chicago, and prior to the covid pandemic, students taking this class would visit the museum to select artworks to study and write about. Please know that once the pandemic subsides and AIC reopens, you will be able to visit the museum forfree, provided you present your PSC ID. For this summer we will use the Museum’s online collection that can be found by following this link: artic.edu/collection For the essay, you will choose three works of art in the same medium (ex. 3 drawings, paintings, or sculptures.) The artworks must be from different cultures, historical periods, or movements, but shouldbe connected in terms of subject (3 portraits, 3 landscapes, 3 abstract works, etc.) For instance, don’t try to compare a sculpture to a painting. Your essay will describe, analyze, compare, contrast, and interpret these two artworks. Please do not write about artworks represented in the textbook. Minimum Length: 1500 words (roughly 6 typed pages, double-spaced.) A successful essay will describe the visual properties and analyze the form (visual elements and design) and content of artwork you have chosen. Include photographs of all artworks you discuss. Essay Guidelines: The 3 art works should be the same medium, and a similar genre, but from different periods, styles,or cultures (ex. a Neoclassical Portrait compared to a Post-Impressionist Portrait.) Start your essay by identifying the 3 artworks: Artist, Title, Medium, and Date of the piece you are writing about, and the location where you viewed the work. After introducing the artworks, provide a thorough description of their visual properties (paint a picture in words of the artwork.) Use the Elements of Visual Analysis (located in the Content Area of D2L) as a guide to identify key visual properties in the work. Discuss their importance. Follow up by providing insight into the meaning of the artworks, and your own interpretation.End your essay by summarizing the significant similarities and differences between the 3 artworks. All of the ideas and writing must emerge from your own interaction with a work of art. Any quotations or paraphrasing should be kept to a minimum. This essay is fundamentally aboutyour own thoughts and reactions to the artwork you chose. In D2L’s “course documents” you will find a guideline to your analysis of a work of art. Your essay is expected to contain college-level thinking and writing. Assistance in the technical aspects of writing is available online from PSC’s Writing Center.
