Description
Part 1: Research Presentation You will present to the class via a post the results of your qualitative and quantitative research on your final project topic. This is an important step towards the development of the final project and this may serve as the only time this research is made explicit. To do this you will: State the TOPIC your PROJECT addresses:_____________________________________________________________ Identify the Problems or Gaps inherent to your Topic: What’s wrong with the way things are now in your topic area? What problem or gap or need is inherent to your topic? (For example: My topic is secondary education and my project is a revised curriculum and syllabus for teaching health education in CT high schools. The problem is that most health classes teach issues around sexuality in an outdated, unrealistic, out-of-touch way, and they don’t pay enough attention to issues of mental health.) Problem:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Research goal: Find evidence to prove this problem exists. Analysis of the Problem: How did this problem start? Who does it affect and how does it affect them? Where does this problem occur? What harm is caused by this problem? (For example: The problem with the health class curriculum has to do with the way public schools are regulated at the state and federal level. Parents and others try to control class content. The mismatch between the material and student expectations leads to uninformed or misinformed students.) Causes and effects of problem:___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Research goal: Find evidence to prove the causes and effects of this problem. -Proposal to address the Problem: “I am making a_________________________________as a way to help solve this problem (describe your project).” How I think my project will help solve the problem and why:________________________________________________ Research goal: Find evidence to prove that your proposed project will affect the problem in a desired way. – Library Research: Using your answers to the questions above and connecting them to the 3 research goals, generate the following to help you research the UB databases for pertinent information on your topic and project. (See also your free-write exercise answers from last week.) – Research Terms or Key Words: – Research Question: You can present this part of the assignment in paragraph form, powerpoint, and/or a video recording (as long as you attach references and quote sources) Part 2: Annotated Bibliography For this assignment you are required to create an annotated bibliography consisting of five sources. Each article must relate to your project and must be in correct APA format. Do not use any articles or videos that I have introduced to the class. Please visit https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/01/ for any questions you have on how to create an annotated bibliography. Also refer to the rubric below to know how points will be allocated for this assignment. You Need to Include the following: 5 peer reviewed articles 5 general audience articles 5 credible websites (.org/.gov/.edu) 1 qualitative research result generated by you (survey, questionnaire, observation, etc.) 1 quantitative research result generated by you (interview, focus group, etc.) Each entry should include the following points/elements (paragraphs): Summation of the source [focus on what is unique about the source] A brief evaluation statement(s): is this a “scholarly” source or not and is it considered qualitative or quantitative research. How the work is relevant to your research [How, specifically, do you intend to use the source (e.g. as evidence to support a claim, as a counter-argument, etc.)] Part 3: Individual – Respond to 1 peer/groups post Respond to one of your peers’/groups’ posts by extending the conversation with the introduction of new ideas and thoughts. Remember to be polite and respectful in your responses even if you have different ideas than your peer(s).
