Media Representation This short response paper will focus on how the media can “represent” a particular social justice issue. Representation whether in popular culture (for example films, TV shows, etc.) or other forms of media (example news, blogs etc.) can help to inform our understanding of issues in society. These representations need to be critically analyzed as they have lasting and profound impressions. For this assignment, we will focus on the news (print, televised or radio). You are asked to review at least two news stories that focus on a social justice issue. Please look up that issue and how it is represented in at least two different news stories. You are then asked to write an analysis of how the story is presented to the reader, who is telling the story and how as well as the choices made and/or implications of how that story is told. Please start by reading the following: https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/full/10.1377/hlthaff.2016.0011 Keep in mind: • Choose a topic that interests you and falls broadly within the categories of the class. • Look for at least two media representations and read the story to see how the news media discusses the issue (what does the article focus on, how is the issue described). • Write a response paper which means you are expected to take a position in your paper. • Analysis and evidence is key. Please do not simply summarize the news articles. Papers must meet the requirements indicated below, papers that do not will be penalized. General Requirements: 1. Students will use at least one reading from class which can include the article in this assignment prompt, at least one reading from class and at least two news media (newspaper article, video from a news story, etc.) representations. 2. Students will conduct independent research on their paper topic. 3. Standard formatting: 1-inch margin and 12 point Times/Times New Roman font and written in black ink. The paper will be 3-4 (double spaced). 4. Do not include a title page. At the top right of the first page please include name, student ID, date, class (JS 804) single spaced followed by a title in the center of the paper
