Description
My introduction to read is in the files. The topic is “ drilling for oil in the Arctic” to find photos. As you are finding supporting information, think about when an image may be appropriate as “proof” or “evidence.”Each image should be relevant to the topic, convey pertinent information, and be described clearly. You should have a variety of image types. Some general ideas for why you might choose certain types of images include: 1. Maps: yes, maps show you where something is, but I expect maps to be used to show the spatial distribution of data: concentration of cancer cases in a neighborhood, for example, or the extent of a coal ash spill. 2. Photos: by far, photos are the best way to evoke emotion. If you want to convey that a process is harmful or healthy, portraying people in the situation is convincing. Similarly, photos effectively convey environmental damage. 3. Graphs: excellent choice for conveying trends over time or the relationship between two variables (contaminants in water and number of health issues, for example). Most people are familiar with pie charts, and that is fine, but realize that different types of graphs have different levels of effectiveness. THE ASSIGNMENT 1. Visit the website below to learn more about using visualizations. There are 3 tabs: Reading, Quiz, and Resources. Read through the “Reading” and then go to the “Quiz” tab and take the quiz. Once you’ve gotten a score for your quiz, upload a photo showing your quiz score (screen capture or phone photo). You may retake the quiz as many times as you like. https://www.visionlearning.com/en/library/Process-of-Science/49/Using-Graphs-and-Visual-Data-in-Science/156/reading 2. Upload 5 or more images that you would consider using for your project. Each image should have a) a figure number, b) a caption that describes the image and explains its relevance to the problem, and c) an in-text citation. Full references should be provided at the end of the document. APA style should be used for all references and in-text citations throughout this course. Make sure you include a variety of image types (e.g., photos, graphs, maps, etc.). A grading rubric is provided for reference. Next week, you will grade the images of 3 of your peers (anonymously) using the rubric provided and provide feedback via comments as needed. NOTE: You may add more images or change the images you use as you continue to do research! This assignment is intended to provide feedback on your ability to choose and describe images appropriately. Remember that the assignments build on one another, so you should revise your introduction while working on the images, then you will revise your images, while working on the next component, etc. The figures on the example posters serve as examples. You can find the examples under Module 5 Advocacy Campaign Posters or within Assignments.
