Interactive communication video script and critic

Description

VIDEO ASSIGNMENT SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate proficiency in using several of the communication techniques learned in this course, critique your communication skills, and identify areas for continued growth. Step 1: Select one or two partners for filming; Use a classmate, friends, or family members as your filming partner. Submit this assignment to MindTap for grading. Step 2: Write a script that outlines what you and your filming partner will be saying on the video to demonstrate your proficiency with the required techniques. All skills demonstrated should relate to a professional practice issue. At the beginning of your presentation, please state your name, then label ALL parts of the techniques on the script, but do not voice them on video. You can simply hold up a neatly labeled card. This semester you will only be performing Win-win problem solving for the video submission of this assignment. (Step 5 of your script.) You will be using techniques you have learned from your MindTap videos and steps 1-4 of your script. After recording, check that you are within the 100mb maximum length allowed by MindTap. A PowerPoint presentation is not required. 5. Win-win problem solving: Negotiate for something you want to happen related to your work environment. Use the 6-step process described in chapter 12 (pp. 403-406) to demonstrate win-win communication skills. Be sure to use the assertive message format (pp. 362-365 in Ch. 11) to describe Step 3 (your problem and unmet needs) to the other person. In step 5 (negotiate a solution), remember to demonstrate all four (4) sub-steps. (restate, brainstorm, evaluate, determine the best solution) Label each step on the script as you use it. Step 3: Role-play all techniques for win-win problem-solving. If you are working with a partner from class, you will be submitting 2 separate videos (one with you as the main actor and one with your classmate as the main actor using different scripts. Both performers must be on screen to demonstrate proper positioning and body language. If you do not have a partner, place your camera across the room from you and use your computer as your partner. Everyone remember to put your camera in a horizontal and not a vertical position. Step 4: Watch the completed video and develop a critique of your performance using ONE Word or PDF file before submission to the D2L Assignments folder: 1) How effectively did you utilize each step in the technique? 2) Was anything missing or could anything be improved? Describe and give alternatives. (There is always room for improvement!) 3) How effective was your verbal and nonverbal behavior? Were you in/out of character? Explain. 4) How difficult was the exercise? Be honest, and note both your strengths and weaknesses. 5) Write a summary of how you plan to use the communication skills learned in this course in the future. Before each of the following (and #5) describe your scene. Where are you and who are you with so that I have an idea of what you are doing. Each technique must be a separate situation and be clearly identifiable; do not blend the examples together. 1. Perception–checking: Role-play a situation in which you are confused about the meaning of the other person’s behavior. Use the complete skill of perception checking (as outlined in your textbook on pp.123-125) to clarify the meaning of the behavior and prevent misconceptions. Label the elements of the technique (behavior, interpretations, request for clarification). 2. Developing Empathy: Demonstrate effective use of the Pillow Method (pp. 131-133 in the text) by attempting to understand another’s point of view or position on a controversial or ethical matter with which you would typically strongly disagree. Be sure to include and label the five (5) positions. 3. Listening skills: Role-play a conversational situation in which your partner is discussing a problem, and You are using effective listening skills from Chapter 8 to encourage discussion of the other’s feelings, convey empathy, and help with problem-solving without giving advice. You must demonstrate and identify >five (5) communication techniques for full credit. (Prompting, Questioning, Paraphrasing, Supporting, Analyzing, Advising, Judging) 4. Receiving & responding to criticism: Role-play a situation that involves responding non-defensively to criticism from a client/patient, coworker, or supervisor. Use >four (4) of the techniques outlined in your textbook (pp. 367-372). Label the technique(s) you are using on the script.
