Annotated Bibliography and Paper Thesis and Outline

Learning Outcome Annotated Bibliography and Paper Thesis and Outline is the second “scaffolded” component towards a thoughtful, creative, and well-argued Research Paper written by you at the end of the term. This assessment provides the opportunity for conducting scholarly research about an artwork and planning argument structure for a research paper. Format: 700-950 words maximum, Times New Roman, size 12 font, double-spaced, 1-inch margin all around, 8.5″ x 11″ paper. Upload a DOC/DOCX/PDF file onto Quercus by the due date. Assignment Instructions Component 1 – Annotated Bibliography Annotated Bibliography is a written document demonstrating research done on the topic and includes the evaluation of your research sources. It consists of citations (use Chicago Manual of Style) and a short paragraph/annotation for each source. In annotations, explain the relevance of the source for your topic and how you intend to use it to support your paper thesis statement and to develop your argument. Format: 100-150 words annotation per source x 3 to 5 sources = 750 words maximum. To properly format your annotated bibliography and for examples of the content of an annotated bibliography, please carefully read “Writing an Annotated Bibliography,”Links to an external site. in “Art History – Research Guide”. Use the Chicago Manual of Style (Links to an external site.) format for citations. Requirements for Research and Sources: You are expected to research your topic and select, read, and annotate 3 to 5 scholarly sources. The sources must be fairly recent (from the 1980s and onwards) and can include e-books or essays in e-books on the artist or the movement, and scholarly articles on your topic/artist/work published in a scholarly journal. The scholarly articles you choose must be between 10-20 pages in length (again, this is a standard length for a scholarly article in art history and other humanities). You may also use primary sources, such as artist writings or exhibition reviews, if relevant. For a refresher on how to recognize scholarly sources watch the video (3:12) “Scholarly vs. Popular Periodicals. (Links to an external site.)” Important note on sources: Wikipedia, various art blogs, short descriptions of artworks or artists’ biographies available on museum and gallery sites, are not acceptable as your sources for this assignment. To start your research: Consult the “Art History – Research Guide” Links to an external site.posted on the course page in Quercus and explore the links to “Art Encyclopedias,” “Art Dictionaries,” and “Articles.” You may want to look up your research topic (by artist’s name, movement, work’s title, medium, or the keywords related to your topic) using “Oxford Art Online” as a preliminary tool. To locate scholarly articles, you can do your search in “ARTbibliographies Modern (ABM).” You can also seek help with research from Margaret English, Art Department Librarian (contact info provided on 1.0.5 Syllabus: Resources). NOTE: Quality Research Takes Time. Researching scholarly sources, reading, and evaluating the significance of the sources for your topic takes time. Be prepared to repeat the research process until you have found the sources that can help you support your thesis and develop your argument. Component 2 – Paper Thesis and Outline Format: 200 words maximum, single-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point type. Requirements: Clearly state your paper thesis (one or two sentences) and provide a concise sentence outline of your paper and its main components (intro, the main body of the paper with 3 points of support for your argument, and conclusion). The structure of your paper should be clear from your outline. State how your annotated sources support your argument. Include a photo of the work discussed. NOTE: The thesis is the main idea or points you want to argue in your paper. It must be based on and supported by your research and grounded in the visual properties of the artwork. Your thesis must be well-written, plausible, and nuanced. Before you start writing outline, read “Organizing and Planning”Links to an external site. for clarifications and examples of a paper outline and thesis. please find the preliminary thesis and the work of choice in the uploaded files
