Discussion 9: Islam REFER TO CHAPTER 6 OF ATTATCHED BOOK First of all, how many of you were surprised that Islam turned out to be more familiar with regard to its beliefs and practices than you would have thought? Like Jews and Christians, Muslims believe in one God. They believe that God communicates with mankind through prophets. They believe in the obligation to pray and to care for those who are less fortunate. Did you find ideas in Islam that are unique and not common to other traditions we have studied? Second, now that you know much more about Qur’anic teaching about women and the use of violence, how accurately do you think most people understand these aspects of Islam? How did the Muslim web sites compare to others you have looked at? Are the same kinds of issues, concerns, themes addressed? Third, pick one passage from the Qur’an and compare or contrast it to a similar passage from another of the religion such as taoism, buddhism, christianity, judaism. How similar or different are they? Note that this is “half” of what you’ll be doing in your final essay, so this part of your post can overlap your essay.. Finally, what kind of internship or other volunteer experience would help you gain experience and help you work toward your eventual workplace/career goals? Have you looked into doing volunteer work that would be helpful in progressing toward your eventual career goal?
