PAPER INSTRUCTIONS: Although this paper should include biographical information about the photographer you choose, it must focus on the discussion of one single image that you choose by this photographer. In other words, you will be writing about the life and interest of the photographer through the window of a single image. Discussion ideas How is this image representative of the photographer’s interests and concerns? What is the photo about? All of these artists photograph people. Include what you have learned about early portraiture. How does this photo represent the artist’s influences, background, concepts? How does this photo effect you personally? Why did you choose this image? What do you think the influence of this photograph is? Is the image influence by other photographers or mentors? Is the image influenced by culture or gender? How was the photo received by viewers? Has the meaning of the photo change over time? Is the photo relevant now? Why will you remember this photo? CHOOSE ONE Photographer below: Sabastiao Salgado WRITE ABOUT: Choose any one image that this photographer made and explain how it represents the artist’s concerns and interests both aesthetically (the way it looks; visual elements) and conceptually (ideas and intention). (You can include the image in your paper, but it is not required. Just the title is required). This can include some of your own opinion, but must also include documented research. Try to use paraphrasing WITH in-text citations rather than a string of quotes. Do not just use blocks of quotes. Instead interpret your research. Always cite your references! How to construct your paper: 1.) Cite at least 3 academic resources on a works cited page. NOTE* I will provide one of your academic articles. Include this article in your ‘works cited’ page. a.) Include in-text citations (even when paraphrasing), as well as, a “works cited” page. b.) DO NOT use videos, Wikipedia, Britanica.com, artsy, museum or gallery websites etc., these are not academic resources. You need to find articles and can do this through the library online. 2.) Consult the library for research suggestions. 5.) Feel free to include your photo image in the paper (this is not required) 6.) Your paper should be 600-1000 words. Do not include works cited page in your word count. Analyze your research material. No more than 10% percent of your paper may be in quotes. Instead you may paraphrase or summarize your research. You MUST still include intext citations even when paraphrasing.
