Survey of US History II: From the End of Reconstruction to the 21st Century THEME: WOMEN IN HAWAII (1950-2000) 1. You will expand on your previous essay by adding a newspaper item: https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/search/titles/#tab=tab_advanced_search and Openstax textbook: https://openstax.org/books/us-history/pages/16-introduction for the period 1950-2000 on the same topic. • Adding (1) an analysis of a newspaper item from 1950-2000 • (2) context from the textbook for the new item. The new item should be on the same theme you wrote about for the previous essay. You will consider changes over time that the two items reveal about your topic. Here’s a table outlining the essay requirements. Introduction • Briefly introduce your topic, newspaper items, and time periods in which they were produced. (15 points) • In a thesis statement, summarize what you learned about the time periods in which your newspaper items were produced. What changes over time do the items reveal about your topic? (15 pts) • Provide a title for your essay. It could be the topic you’re exploring or a question you’re posing. Body paragraph 1 – Analysis of newspaper item #1 For item #1 (from your Previous essay)… • a description of your item’s content from 1890-1950, summarized in your own words (5 pts) • basic facts about about your newspaper item: who produced it, if known; what the newspaper and the item is titled; when it was produced; where the newspaper was published; why it was published / why the topic is significant. What was the author’s purpose, do you think? (5 pts) • a quote from the item that is relevant to your topic (5 pts) • it’s historical significance– what does it reveal about the time and place? (5 pts) Body paragraph 2 – Context for item #1 For item #1 (from your Previous essay)… • relevant facts about the time in which your item from 1890-1950 was published, summarized in your own words from the (5 pts) Openstax textbook: https://openstax.org/books/us-history/pages/16-introduction. Include the page numbers. • facts about the place for your item from the OpenStax textbook, if relevant; this may be local, national, and/or global, based on your topic (5pts) • explicitly describe how the textbook context you provide is connected to your item or how it helps us understand your item. You may want to compare/contrast how your item and the textbook present the past (10 pts). PARAGRAPH 3 – Analysis of newspaper item #2 – For item #2 (from the period 1950-2000)… • a description of your item’s content from 1950-2000, summarized in your own words (5 pts) • basic facts about about your newspaper item: who produced it, if known; what the newspaper and the item is titled; when it was produced; where the newspaper was published; why it was published / why the topic is significant. You may use more than one source if need be. CONCLUSION Summarize what you learned about the times and places of your topic and newspaper items. Are there lingering questions you weren’t able to fully address? (5 points) Citations Provide complete citations for your sources: • Your newspaper items (5 points, include links) • OpenStax pages (5 points, links) • The source you selected for “today’s relevance” (5 points, include link)
