Assessing The Contribution of the Voëlvlei Dam Fishery to Rural Livelihoods: A Market Value Chain Approach

The aim of this study is to conduct a market value chain assessment of the contribution of inland fisheries to rural livelihoods of small scale fishers at the Voëlvlei dam located in Western Cape Province of South Africa. The study will therefore be guided by the following specific objectives: • To map and analyse the market value chain of the Voëlvlei dam fishery • To examine the embedded socio-ecological contexts of the market value chain of the Voëlvlei dam fishery • To assess the contribution by the Voëlvlei dam fishery to sustainable rural livelihood of small scale fishers This chapter should provide the operational definitions of some keywords used in this study. In addition, the chapter should review studies that offer international and local evidence on this topic. The policies at the national level that directly and indirectly play a role in the area of the study in South Africa will also need to be reviewed to understand the institutional structure linked to the topic. The literature review will need to move from discussing broader and then to specific, i.e. • Global view • African continent view • South African view. Then you must touch on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), • what is the broader vision of these goals? • where does it feature in South Africa, and then the relevance and incorporation to the study? You certainly want to know what literature says about: 1. Inland fisheries • Categories of fishers: small commercial recreational • Fisheries contribution to livelihoods • Policies affecting fisheries governance/exploitation • Fisheries sustainability SDGs 2. Market Value Chains • What the concept entails • How the MVCs concept can enhance: • Fisheries contribution to livelihoods • Fisheries sustainability • The evidence available on, and gaps in, the use of MVCs in inland fisheries
