Visit a virtual gallery or museum and choose a work of art to critique. Visually analyze the work of art and critique it based on the visual elements of art (line, shape, color, etc.), principles of design (rhythm, composition, balance, etc.), subject matter, content, and function. What is the medium? Who is the artist? What is the title and what was the date when it was created?Next, choose a work of art we have studied in class, or a work of art from your textbook, and conduct a visual analysis of it. Include the visual elements (line, shape, color, texture, etc.), principles of design (rhythm, composition, balance, etc.), function, subject matter, and content. What is the medium? Who is the artist? What is the title and what was the date when it was created? Then, using one of the modes of analysis—iconographic, contextual (historical/religious/social/biographical), feminist, gender studies, or psychological)—compare your virtual art gallery or museum choice with the work you choose from class. Describe why the method of analysis you are using is appropriate and interesting for this comparison. The works of art you choose must have something in common, whether it is the subject matter, the content, the medium, the artist, or the function. Use at least 5 vocabulary words from lecture and/or your textbook to describe the work of art at the gallery or museum and 5 vocabulary words to describe the other work of art from lecture/textbook. Your paper should be minimum 5 pages long. Here are some questions to help you along with your analytical comparison:1. Who was the artist? What was happening in the time period that this artist was making artwork in? 2. Using formal analysis, explain how the artist’s handling of the formal elements of art reflect the historical context of the work. 3. Was the artist making social commentary through their work? What were they saying? Do these themes exist in our world today? Has the dialogue changed?4. Was the artist using materials in an innovative and/or revolutionary way? These are just ideas to help you formulate your thesis. It is essential that you have a thesis in your introductory paragraph. The remainder of your paper must support your thesis with evidence!Think of your thesis as your theory or claim, the point you are trying to convince the reader is true. For this assignment you will be expected to:1. Visit a virtual exhibition at an art museum (be sure to tell me where you went!)2. Formulate a thesis which is in your introductory paragraph and support it throughout your essay with evidence.3. Evidence must be from what you saw in the exhibition and outside sources. These can be from a book or from an article or journal. The more sources the more evidence you have to support your thesis but please do not include more than 5.5. Your paper requirements are as follows: 12-point Times New Roman font (or other standard font), double-spaced, 1-inch margins, and page numbers in the top right. Please do not include a cover page.NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. This paper is worth 25% of your overall class grade, please manage your time wisely.
