Module 2: This week’s lecture and readings covered discussion about the gap between the rhetoric of post-Civil War freedom for former slaves and the reality of their continued subjugation under the Jim Crow system. What was the Jim Crow system? What two aspects of the practice do you think are most historically memorable? 2. Module 3: This week’s lecture and readings covered discussion of the Progressive era in US History. This period’s basic underlying motto was that (a) progress could be achieved in society and (b) government was the proper mechanism for achieving progress. What example from this era do you think best represents this impulse? What example can you point to from the modern period that reflects the Progressive impulse in American society? 3. Module 4: This week’s lecture and readings covered a wide-ranging discussion of the 1920s. It was surely a time of great social, political, and cultural changes in the US. Please select the person/event/idea that you feel best embodies the changing US during the 1920s. Explain why you selected the topic that you did etc. 4. Module 5: This week’s lecture and readings covered discussion of the US during the World War II era. While speeches like President Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms” indicated that the US soldiered to promote basic human freedoms globally, this was not exactly the case in the US. Please discuss examples in which American society during the 1940s failed to live up to the promises of freedom that the US government made to the world. 5. Module 6: This week’s curriculum covered discussion of a changing post-World War II American society. Please select and analyze an example of a marginalized group seeking social justice. Why did you select the example that you did? How did that group articulate their demands for equality and what evidence do historians point to when assessing the group’s success/failures?
