ANTHROPOLOGY 304 TRADITIONAL CULTURES OF THE WORLD Dr. Eric Canin Fall 2018 CSU Fullerton Essay 1: Traditional Cultures Points: 15 Prompt: A friend plans to travel after college graduation, and asks you to recommend an interesting and worthwhile place to visit, far from the suburban landscape of southern California. Knowing your friend, this does not mean just nice beaches, but someplace “real.” Since you are taking an anthropology class, you have a few suggestions. Your friend asks you to name a couple of places. For each of the two cultures you mention, the friend asks ‘why should I go there?,’ what the people and environment are like, and what are some interesting cultural traditions. What do you say? Your essay will be more formal than a conversation with a friend, but will give you the information to answer those questions. Choosing a topic and research: Find and select 2 traditional cultures from eHRAF. These cultures should be small-scale, living (have living members), and traditional. The two cultures selected should preferably make an interesting comparison. Begin your research with the eHRAF Culture Summary for each of the cultures you choose. 3. Extend your research with at least one more source for each culture. You may use the textbook, but it cannot be your only other source for a culture. While websites and magazines may be helpful and should be referenced as additional sources, they cannot be the only source. Your two academic sources can be found: in the Bibliography at the end of the eHRAF Cultural Summary. in the References at the end of our textbook, Culture Sketches. in the CSU Fullerton Pollock library, in print and electronic format. Essay: 3.5-5 pages for the essay itself (875-1250 words), double-spaced, 1” margins, divided into 5 sections: 1. Introduction: Introduce your 2 cultures, and why you have chosen each. 2. Culture 1: discuss the people, the location and natural environment, and a few cultural traditions. 3. Culture 2: discuss the people, the location and natural environment, and a few cultural traditions. 4. Comparison: what do the cultures share in common, and how are they different? 5. Conclusion: summarize what you learned about the cultures and their comparison. Each paragraph should start with a topic sentence, consist of complete sentences, otherwise follow the rules of English grammar, and be coherent. III. References: 4 minimum Reference all your sources. Two of your sources will come the eHRAF cultural summary. You will find the citation by clicking on the Cite button on the upper right of the summary. Your other 2 sources come from academic journals or books. Recommended: highlight those two sources in bold if you have other sources as well. In-text citation: Each source used should be cited somewhere in the essay (after a quote or use of an idea), with this format at the end of the sentence: (Smith, 1999: 34-35.) References section: Each source used should be included in References at the end of your essay. Use APA style for References, or the style used in your major.
