Description
Here is the explanation how to approach your upcoming paper. The structure should roughly assume a following order: 1. Intro: fairly short anecdote from the case of your choice that raises the attention to a specific empirical puzzle (i.e. what explains “…”?). In your introduction you should already announce your tentative argument/hypothesis, and offer a succinct explanation of what (will be in your focus), why (should anyone pay attention to your claims, i.e. how is this related to existing research), and how (can this be explained using existing concepts from theory, what kind of conceptual interaction/relation will you highlight). 2. Conceptual framework: you should explain the body of knowledge on which you are building your argument, demonstrate that you are offering a creative way to connect different concepts in order to address a specific phenomenon in your case. It is important to have an overarching argument which can connect all of your main ideas into a coherent unit. This will help you avoid conducting a simplistic overview of the case, as well as a simplistic analysis of only one theory/concept in the case. Thanks to your conceptual framework your case will will become a story of something, instead of an idiosyncratic account. You are expected to formulate a generalizable argument, that can hold in may other cases, not just the one you have selected. The conceptual framework should produce your main hypothesis/argument that can be illustrated in the case. 3. Case analysis: should mainly focus on the issues that are raised in your conceptual framework. Try to avoid the trivial, the remotely historical, explanations that have nothing to do with your argument and with the concepts you are trying to illustrate. The link between the framework and case analysis should be very explicit, especially as the ‘how’ part in your intro/framework should already indicate ways in which a certain conceptual phenomenon can be observed and assessed. 4. Conclusion: should not introduce any new case, policy reflection, or concept, unless they are directly related to what you have already analyzed and conceptualized. The paper should have a summary of the main findings that actually reflect on what was announced in the introduction. The stronger the link between introduction and conclusion, the stronger the paper. Please cite the paper when using sources
