Description
Respond to the main post of at least one colleague. Your response should be a minimum of 100 words and should be significant and substantial. What does this mean, you may ask? You want a response that gets your classmates thinking and, hopefully, responding to you as well. You may consider asking a question. You may point out a different aspect of conversation, one that your classmate did not address. You may disagree gently and respond with an alternative idea of your own, keeping in mind that mutually respectful discourse is expected. Everyone does not all have to agree, but everyone does have to disagree respectfully. classmates post: My argumentative paper is about the process of the separation of gender roles. I argue that gender roles are a set of behaviors learned through observation, imitation, and conditioned socialization opposed to being biological or occurring naturally at birth. My paper correlates with the story about the yellow wallpaper because it includes the societal view of things. In my paper one point I make is that society molds us to fit into a certain box of stereotypical behaviors. Society views mental illness as a horrible stigma and people are constantly trying to conform to having the characteristic traits that are deem normal. This is exactly how gender roles are created, through appropriation. The woman in the yellow wallpaper was pretty much locked away by her husband until she conformed to what was “normal” behavior for a mother and wife. She was placed into an assigned gender role at birth, learned how to perform, and then chastised for not performing appropriately. The woman is very trusting of her husband because his gender role is to lead and be the dominate figure as the male in the situation. He knows better than she knows because of his role as Dr. and as her husband. She accepts her fate based on him knowing best for her situation. “Staying in a Woman’s Place” is how society can place a notion of how you should behave and either reinforce or punish until the behavior is conformed to be more acceptable by others. The perspective of society creates a big problem because it tries to fit individuals into a specific direction. Reference Gilman, C.
